Sketch book - Exercise:stipples and dots - pen and ink

In this project, I was asked to look closely at single natural objects. I worked using line, looking at tone and trying out stippling with an ink pen. I found using a range of pencils easiest, and the most effective tool to get tone and depth. However I believe with more practice using ink and pen would be a more effective tool.

In my opinion hatching works best to create tone, pattern and texture. However to get an accurate picture of pattern and texture, you need to look closely at the type of surface being drawn and experiment with marks to portray that certain surface.

Personally I enjoy creating big broad sketches instead of capturing tiny detail.  However I find it very interesting when images are made mostly of loosely, fast strokes, with some areas highlighting detail.

In this project I haven’t really thought in detail about composition as I have been drawing single objects. I think the best way to come up with good compositions is to arrange objects in several ways – taking snapshots of each. Then looking at the images usually helps with identifying which composition will work well.

Doing a line drawing did help me to look at space more effectively. It allowed me to see the space surrounding the object and the space between the lines within the object.
